“I love doing what I do. I work directly with the children and their families in the community and within their homes. Each client is unique, and I use whatever modality that seems to work best with each one.” – Charlie, VR Customer

Story

As a U.S. Military Veteran and Social Security Disability recipient, Charlie applied for VR services in August of 2018. Charlie was referred by Lewis and Clark State College (LCSC) for educational assistance to support his goal of obtaining employment in the human services field. Due to the physical demands of the various positions that he was applying for, Charlie struggled to maintain employment that would be within his physical abilities.

After Charlie was determined eligible for VR Services, he worked with his VR Counselor to identify his vocational goal within the human services field. Charlie received support from VR for tuition, fees and his required books, to obtain his bachelor’s degree. As a result, he was able to meet the educational requirements for this type of work.

With significant dedication to his goals and education, Charlie graduated with his bachelor’s degree in May of 2022. Charlie stated, “If not for Voc Rehab, my loans for school would have been far more expensive than they are now.”

Prior to graduation, Charlie independently obtained employment as a behavioral interventionist, and he was able to begin working within his chosen field.

Charlie’s case with Vocational Rehabilitation was closed successfully in April of 2023.

Charlie maintained his position for 18 months and gained valuable skills that allowed him to take a step to open his own business providing behavioral intervention services.

Since his case was closed, Charlie began his business Charlie’s Behavioral Services in 2024 where he provides services to individuals ages 5 to 21 years old with developmental disabilities; autism, trauma, suicidal ideation, significant mental health diagnoses and their families to achieve their individualized-behavioral goals while considering their individual strengths and support needed. He provides assistance to organize their family dynamics and create customized, consistent, and compassionate support plans.

“Charlie’s determination, positive attitude and responsiveness fostered a great working relationship throughout his time working with Vocational Rehabilitation. His hard work during college and his initiative to secure employment (on his own & prior to graduation) truly reflects his commitment to success! I am so proud to see, that since we last worked with Charlie, that he is now also selfemployed and continuing to make a difference!” – Angela Moran, VR Counselor
